FROM THE EDITOR

This week, we grab our instant article kit and probe into the growing trend of domain-specific development kits for specialized embedded systems.  In this case, we examined Celoxica's new development board plus IP that's aimed at companies producing high-throughput video applications.  When an application demands more performance than we can get simply with software running on commodity processors, the time-to-market value of a ready-made development and prototyping kit skyrockets.

Thanks for reading! If there's anything we can do to make our publications more useful to you, please let us know at: comments@embeddedtechjournal.com

Getting the Kit
Celoxica Highlights Trend with RC340 for Digital Video

"Has your friend Megan ever tried knitting?"

My daughter replied with a roll of her eyes. "Oh Dad, I'm sure she's got the kit. Megan's got the kit for everything."

Megan was an aspiring young artist, and apparently her parents showed their support by buying her every conceivable craft project on the planet in "kit" form. Lost wax casting? Megan's got the kit. Oil painting? There's a kit for that too – with numbers to show where each color goes. Ceramics? Macrame? Woodburning? Sculptural Arc Welding? Kit. Kit. Kit. Kit!

The kit was a pre-packaged pathway to success. With the kit, you could shave off months to years of ramp-up learning, multiple purchases to get the right compatible tools and materials, and tons of research to learn exactly the right process that would yield acceptable results. The kit had everything you needed except a dollop of creativity. Crack open the package and you could be up and whatever-ing like a near-pro in no time flat. [more]
